Languages of Web Design
There are many languages involved in Website Design. Each consists of their own nuances and each serve their own function in the different ways that Websites work.
Think of it like this -
On the client (user) side:
Server side languages allow website makers to perform “pre and post presentation” functions and is frequently used for a variety of things like:
- store data in a database like MySQL, SQL or other database technologies
- retrieve, restructure and organize data
- perform calculations
- send email from a website
- user login systems
- content management systems
The above list doesn’t encompass all of the reasons for server side programming, there a many other reasons as well however this is just an introduction.
A few core server side languages include the likes of PHP, ASP, .NET, ColdFusion, Python, and even some custom languages that I my self have no intentions on delving into anytime soon.
To achieve proficiency, or hell even to just get anything other than learning done, I suggest learning one and learning it well. PHP is my favorite and considering it is free and open, and there are so many people using it – this has led to many open source projects that give you a lot to draw on. Many other languages cost money to run and is a lot harder to find resources to draw upon without opening your wallet.
